Converting from Coal to Gas to Meet Emission Standards
Our client needed to replace their coal-fired steam plant with a gas-fired steam plant with capacity reaching 85,000 pounds per hour in order to meet upcoming emission standards while meeting their current needs.
Their endeavor required an accelerated schedule, and the project required outdoor installation, making design considerations more complex.
Our designs included multiple engineering disciplines to support this project. Civil included site re-grading, underground gas and water piping, guards, and barriers.
Structural included boiler and equipment foundations, and pipe support design, which primarily consisted of posts attached to concrete piers. The pipe supports also included a pipe bridge across the road providing 16’ overhead clearance.
Electrical scope included powering of all boiler equipment, control cabling, and heat trace. Our mechanical design included chemical addition, water treatment, sampling, and a natural gas pressure reduction station. This also included underground and above-ground gas distribution.
With all piping layouts developed in 3D software, we were able to incorporate many of the late changes to the boiler and surge tank de-aerator design into the final construction package without any delay.
During construction, we resolved all field questions efficiently, which allowed construction to be completed on schedule. We also assisted in testing and verifications to confirm the finished design would match compliance and operate at maximum efficiency.
