Rollins College
The Alfond Inn
Salas O’Brien provided engineering services to support air quality and ventilation at the Alfond Inn at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.
Our client
The Alfond Inn at Rollins College offers upscale accommodations and luxury features, but it isn’t your average boutique hotel. This stylish getaway was built on a grant from the Harold Alfond Foundation with the vision to fund merit-based Rollins scholarships with the hotel’s proceeds.
Project highlights

Their challenge
For this project, Salas O’Brien was brought in by Baker Barrios Architects to ensure the inn’s air quality and ventilation needs were met. The 150,000-square-foot, LEED Silver hotel balances indoor and outdoor guest spaces, and it features meeting and event spaces complemented by full service kitchens, an elevated pool deck, and a gallery that displays art collections on loan from Rollins’ Cornell Fine Arts Museum.
Our solution
Air cooled chillers on the roof provide cooling to the main areas of the facility. For the inn’s 112 guest rooms, our design utilizes 100% outside air units and chilled water fan coil units to meet AC and ventilation requirements. To aid the completion of this project our team also provided engineering services for the hotel’s fire pump and diesel generator, which supports life safety systems.
The results
Thanks to our engineering support, the Winter Park destination is fulfilling its mission to fund scholarships, and it has earned a Four Diamond rating and a consistent ranking as Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice best hotel in Florida in the process.
