Process and mechanical

Salas O’Brien’s process and mechanical team are experts at developing effective process solutions for cement and lime producers. From ensuring optimal processing and capacity throughput, to selecting the most appropriate equipment for the job, we have the experience to understand your requirements and deliver high value results.

Our team’s 3D orthographic layouts utilize material flow characteristics as a baseline for equipment selection, layouts, and design of chutes, nuisance dust collection and piping. Our SMACCTM review process ensures that Safety, Maintenance, Access, Constructability, and Coordination are an integral part of embedding our clients’ know-how and operational needs into final designs.

For work in existing facilities, our laser scanning and existing conditions modeling results in design of seamless existing to new interfaces.

Structural

Our structural team develops foundation and structural steel designs in tandem with our mechanical team. By engaging early during mechanical design progression, we ensure that key elements – static loads, dynamic loads, maintenance platforms/hoists/pull zones – are accounted for early in the structural engineering process. Our depth of experience includes both heavy industrial horizontal facilities and vertical facilities up to 400’ tall. We regularly develop designs considering high temperatures, substantial vibrations, and extreme equipment loading.

We also have considerable experience in structural condition assessment and emergency design services related to eminent structural failure or failure events. Our engineers can typically be deployed to a client’s site within 48 hours if warranted.

Our clients often have requirements for large bins, hoppers, process ducts, and storage silos. We regularly develop platework designs and/or reinforced concrete designs to meet these needs.   For large silos, and as a project commences, we typically work in collaboration with our client’s supplier of the silos to refine designs to best suit their supplier’s means and methods.

Electrical and controls

Salas O’Brien’s electrical team collaborates with our mechanical and structural departments to provide full-service electrical and controls design. Our knowledge of the latest applicable National Electrical Codes (NEC) and ability to align with other applicable codes and standards imposed by AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) supports the generation of customized solutions for facilities of all types and sizes.

Our power study capabilities include arc flash analysis, load flow and short circuit calculations, coordination curves, protection relay settings, and generation of arc flash labels per IEEE 1584-2018 and NFPA 70E.

We develop power systems designs including Motor/Load Lists, single line diagrams, MCC, transformer, and panelboard sizing and specifications, motor schematics, and cable/wire specifications and sizing.

Our considerable control system design experience includes control and instrumentation wiring diagrams, Input/Output Lists, Instrument/Device lists, and control panel design.

Our 3D modeling expertise ensures that our grounding, electrical room, lightning protection, lighting, cables tray, and large electrical control and junction boxes are considered and integrated into our mechanical and structural design layouts.

Waste materials gain a new life as sustainable fuel sources

Salas O’Brien was brought in by the client to provide design engineering for receiving, transporting, and feeding Alternative Low Carbon Fuels (ALCF). Our team designed the highly efficient system from receipt to injection – a high speed bridge crane transfers and sorts received material into the storage building, where a pipe conveyor feeds them to a screw weighfeeder/dosing system, which in turn puts the fuel into the calciner.

Enhancing plant capabilities increases production capacity

Salas O’Brien provided comprehensive design services to incorporate the new system into the existing plant, allowing the client to process slag on-site from multiple furnaces. Our team provided engineering support for two new granulators, large process ductwork and exhaust stack, slurry pumps, granulation basins, slag storage pad, dewatering system, transport systems, and bracing systems.

Optimizing cement material processing for maximum efficiency

Salas O’Brien provided engineering design services as Owner’s Engineer for the development of Texas Lehigh’s new granulated blast furnace slag grinding and distribution terminal. Phase I of the project involved installing ground slag storage silos and truck/rail loadouts. Phase II includes the installation of a ball mill and ancillaries to support on-site grinding of slag, limestone, and gypsum.
